How to Create a Wedding Budget
May 7, 2026
A realistic budget is the foundation of your wedding. Learn how to set one, track spending, and prioritize what matters.
Your budget is your most important planning tool. Start by figuring out who is paying. Set a total number. Break it down by category. A typical breakdown is venue and catering (40 percent), photography (10 to 15 percent), attire (5 to 10 percent), flowers and decor (10 percent), music (10 percent), and stationery (2 to 5 percent). Leave 5 to 10 percent for unexpected costs. Track every single expense in a spreadsheet or app. Do not forget the small stuff like stamps, gifts, tips, and favors. They add up. Prioritize your top three items. Spend the most money there. Cut corners on everything else. Be honest with your vendors about your budget. They may be able to recommend a cheaper option. Do not go into debt for a wedding. It is not worth the stress. Adjust your plans if you cannot afford something. A wedding is one day; a marriage is forever.
