Writing Your Own Wedding Vows

May 6, 2026

Personal vows are a beautiful way to express your love. Follow this guide to write vows that are meaningful, authentic, and memorable.

Writing your own vows can be intimidating. Start early — begin thinking about what you want to say at least two months before the wedding. Brainstorm a list of memories, promises, and what you love about your partner. Structure your vows: a statement of love, a few specific memories or qualities you admire, a set of promises, and a closing statement. Be specific. Instead of "I promise to support you," try "I promise to always cheer you on during your triathlons." Do not make them too long — aim for 60 to 90 seconds each, about 150 to 200 words. Practice reading them aloud and time yourself. Do not keep them a secret from each other. Share your drafts a few weeks before so they feel cohesive and match in tone. Finally, breathe. Your partner will love anything that comes from your heart.
