Canceling Your Wedding Guest List

May 6, 2026

Sometimes you need to reduce your guest list after invitations have been sent. Learn how to handle this delicate situation with grace and kindness.

Reducing your guest list after sending invitations is one of the most difficult wedding etiquette challenges. It should only happen due to truly unavoidable circumstances, such as a venue closing, a family emergency, or a dramatic budget shortfall. If you must do it, reach out personally. A phone call is better than an email. Explain the situation honestly but without oversharing. Do not blame the guest or imply they did something wrong. If possible, offer an alternative — a smaller gathering later, a live stream of the ceremony, or hosting a casual party after the honeymoon. Send a thoughtful gift as a gesture of goodwill. Finally, expect that some relationships may be strained. Most people will understand if the circumstances are truly beyond your control, but hurt feelings are natural.
