Wedding Guest Etiquette: What Not to Do

May 6, 2026

Being a great wedding guest is just as important as being a great host. Learn what actions to avoid so you do not accidentally ruin the couple's special day.

Weddings are joyous occasions, but guests can sometimes make mistakes that upset the couple or other attendees. The most common error is arriving late. Being late to the ceremony disrupts the flow and draws attention away from the couple. Always plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early. Another mistake is wearing white. Unless the dress code specifically requests it, avoid any outfit that could be mistaken for bridal attire. This includes cream, ivory, and very pale pastels. Bringing uninvited guests is also problematic. The couple planned for a specific number of people. Do not assume you can bring a date or your children unless the invitation says otherwise. During the reception, avoid posting photos of the couple before they have had a chance to share their own. Wait until they post something first or give you permission. Finally, do not get overly intoxicated. Enjoy the open bar, but know your limits. No one wants to remember the wedding as the day a guest caused a scene.
